CITY YEAR

I was very pleased to be invited to City Year UK’s breakfast event in Birmingham, where I heard about the 50 young people who have embarked on a year of voluntary service in our city.  These volunteers, aged 18-25, have been recruited locally in Birmingham and are dedicating a year of their lives as ‘near-peer’ role models, mentors and tutors in schools in deprived areas of the city such as Handsworth, Lozells, Saltley and Spark Hill.  The members chatted to local business representatives at the breakfast event and described how in the first months of the scheme they have introduced a walking bus scheme, breakfast clubs, playground support and numerous after-school initiatives.  The Headteacher of Parkfield Community School, Hazel Pullry, also spoke movingly of the value that City Year has already brought to her school, significantly reducing absenteeism and playground violence.

I was bowled over by these young people in red jackets and wish them well in their year of service.
