Diagnosing dementia can help families plan

ByTyndallwoods January 21, 2013

The Telegraph leader on 15th January 2012 referred to ‘Dementia sufferers abandoned’ and ‘Diagnosing dementia can help families plan’. A key to coping with dementia in the family is to plan in advance. Ideally there would be a Health and Welfare Lasting Power of Attorney in place. That is reassuring to the donor of the power in that trusted Attorneys are appointed to help and support when help and support is needed. It is helpful to the Attorneys in giving them the necessary authority and discretion to support the donor fully and properly, if the need arises.

Importantly alongside the Health and Welfare Lasting Power of Attorney can go a Letter of Wishes to guide Attorneys. It is part of life time planning. It is an opportunity to say what your principles, values and priorities are to guide decisions which fall to be made when you are not in a position to make them yourself.
