Urban Veg

ByJudy Dyke August 22, 2013

The Urban Veg project is based at heritage attraction Winterbourne House and Garden, Edgbaston Park Road at the University of Birmingham.

The project aims to promote a culture of urban food production as a means to addressing social exclusion and public health. Through the central theme of food growing it will introduce concepts of conservation and sustainability, increased wellbeing through outdoor activity and social interaction, healthy eating and issues of food security.

Earlier in the year  I looked at the list of courses run by Urban Veg and was particularly attracted to a one day course with expert tuition to learn the basics of “Willow Weaving”, taking home your very own hand-made basket at the end of the class.  Some weeks later I arrived at the Urban Veg premises to meet the Course Leader John and my two fellow students.  I had a brilliant day and you can see the results of the lesson.  Roll on September when I have lesson 2 to weave my own trug!  I cannot recommend the Urban Veg courses and demonstrations highly enough.
